I bought this book so I can learn how to really show light in my paintings. Lela’s seven stages technique has been proving to be very helpful. It gives me a strong foundation to approach all my watercolors. I definitely recommend it to those artists who want to learn how to easily bring light and shadows, and softness and space in their watercolors.
Also, I love that this I got this book as an iBook. If I need to see a detail of the painted demonstration, the magnifying glass in the iBook is heaven in contrast with poor picture resolutions so common in printed books. In the iBook, adding comments, notes, highlights etc is a lot easier and more fun. Not to mention that you can carry your entire library wherever you go :)
Very useful tips and fun read.
I like how Lela makes the book to be so full of useful details and yet it is such a fun read. A very fascinating insight into Lela's painting process with practical tips on how to improve your observation skills and 'start seeing'.
A very versatile painting style, easy to follow
I have always had difficulties learning watercolor painting from books as I want to develop my own personal painting style and not just follow along with demonstrations. However most books do not teach me how to think for myself, in a way that I could apply the same knowledge to other subjects. Once I mastered the compositions given in these art books, I could not paint anything else.
This book is refreshingly different as it holds my hand, step-by-step, from the beginning to the end, explaining every step and most importantly why I am doing what I am doing. For the first time, I am able to use the same kind of observation and reasoning given in this book to paint other subjects (like my favorite still lifes) equally well.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to use light and form to create beautiful paintings.
