Teaching Digital Literacies with iPad

Literacy instruction in schools is an age-old task. Teaching students to read, write, communicate, and create has been around since the beginning of formal education. As we see an increase in the number of digital devices in student’s hands, it is important now to recognize how traditional literacies are taking a digital form. It is also important for teachers to recognize how traditional literacies can be translated or transitioned into a digital form to increase productivity, rigor, or success. 


This collection of philosophies, lesson plans, activities, and ideas will help teachers understand a new approach to teaching traditional literacies with digital devices. The contributing authors in this text provide readers with a variety of classroom-tested lesson plan ideas for literacy instruction.


The lesson plans in this book are all from the classroom, and are all Common Core aligned. Each lesson plan has suggested grade levels, apps required, and delivery instructions.


In the core introduction of the text, the authors establish the background framework for literacy instruction and for technology adoption in the classroom. They address the ideas of Inquiry, SAMR, direct instruction, early adoption, and even the ‘great resistor’ teacher. 


This book was written for teachers, by teachers, to shed light on a philosophical approach to teaching and learning with digital devices (specifically the iPad). This philosophy is applicable to any digital device, but the lesson plans in this text center around iPad delivery.
