Forget feather boas, spiked heels and lady beards—the word 'Transgender' has been reclaiming it's innocent definition and challenging the long associated stigma attached to it.
Author Catherine Thorpe, who supported her daughter's transition from a male-to-female identity before high school, is advocating for early parental acceptance in order to help improve the lives of youth everywhere.
In, an unwanted penis, Thorpe helps parents navigate the confusion and fear that surround gender identity and offers strategies for eliminating expectations and learning to accept their children without conditions.
In a Dr. Phil meets Nanny McPhee parenting style, Thorpe urges parents to stop parenting gender and start parenting the child you've been given.

A breath of fresh air!
This book is a beautiful tell all that explains what it is like to be a parent of a transgender child. While I highly recommend this read to any one who has questions about what it means to be trans-gender, I believe this book (which is an incredibly easy read, by the way) should be read by all parents as these are lessons all parents should follow. Trans or not, all children need their parents to be a safe place where they can be themselves and express who they are. There is a lot to be taken away from this novel.
