Animal Research in a Primary Classroom

by Apple Distinguished Educators

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

This course is designed to help grade one to grade three students do independent animal research while utilizing an iPad. This course has been designed to be open ended and allow students to choose their own animal to explore. A variety of resources are shared which are age appropriate for young learners. Students may work on their own or with a partner.

The course works through sharing what a student already knows and wonders about a specific animal, then provides a framework for collecting research. While accessing various websites and animal iPad apps the students are guided to read and listen to information and organize the information on a graphic organizer. For those students who are still developing as readers the iPad speak selection accessibility feature can be accessed.

With research information collected the students are encouraged to create a digital animal research web as well as a labelled image.

The information created, including the digital animal research web and the labelled image, are compiled together using the Book Creator app to create a non fiction research book about the animal. For those students working with a partner instructions are given on how their book pages can be combined together into one group book.

If you have students who think less traditionally and would like to share their learning in another way there is a "What If" Challenge to explore.

The course ends with suggested ways for students to share their final product with their classmates, families, or the world.
