Course Description

Introducing U.P. Math

This course is a professional development course for teachers and administrators who are open to learning how targeted learning experiences, iPad technology and current educational research can be combined with a transformational U.P. MindShift to impact student learning and perception.  Watch for a U.P. Math iTunes U course for students that will be coming soon.

Diagnostic testing confirms that our students continue to enter our 9 Applied Math classrooms with vastly different skill sets. Since 2010, our 9 Applied Math teaching team has been collaborating to improve teaching practice and to create innovative program options for Grade 9 Math students.  Rooted in a growth mindset philosophy, U.P. (Ultimate Potential) Math is a specialized program that is a compilation of best teaching practices including open tasks, mathematical inquiry, iPad supported learning and traditional pedagogical techniques.  U.P. Math graduates become Math class leaders who exude increased confidence and a new-found love of Mathematics. U.P. Math continues to grow, using technology to support excellence and equity in the Math classroom.

How to use this course:
  • Listen to our story.  Does it resonate with yours? Do your students need U.P. Math to help them to reach their ultimate potential in Math and in school?
  • Review your data.  Study it and connect it with the faces in your classrooms and school.  Ask yourself what you, in your school or board community, need to learn in order to meet the student learning needs and preferences suggested by your data.  Let this information guide your professional inquiry and development.
  • Survey your students and staff to determine the extent to which they subscribe to a growth mindset.  Learn about classroom practices that support the U.P. Mind Shift and try some of them with your students.  Watch for many more postings relating to the development of the U.P. Mind Shift in the math classroom. This will be the focus of a three-year international project that we are beginning, learning from and sharing with teachers from Ontario, Alberta and Norway.
  • Review pertinent educational research.  In this course, you will find links to research that served to inform and direct U.P. Math practice.  Remember that we are constantly learning and adding to this research library, so stay tuned for new postings related to research-based practices that impact student achievement and perception.
  • If you decide that U.P. Math would benefit your students and learning community, explore the course section that describes U.P. Math course design and implementation strategies.
  • Research tells us that when coupled with effective pedagogy, technology drives deep learning.  Explore how iPad can enhance and transform learning in your Grade 9 Applied and U.P. Math classrooms.
