Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It speaks to the courage and resilience of one man, the savagery of many, and the potential, for both good and for ill, in us all. – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jan 13, 2015

Fresh: It is so fluent and so certain -- both in its humanism and its depiction of institutionalised savagery. – Craig Mathieson, The Age (Australia), Jan 13, 2015

Fresh: Easily the most powerful, compelling, devastating, and just plain blunt film about slavery ever made, Steve McQueen's adaptation of Solomon Northup's 1853 memoir, 12 Years a Slave is a raw and searing indictment. – Gary Dowell, Dark Horizons, Jan 13, 2015

Fresh: McQueen depicts the horrific experiences of Solomon Northup, the free man kidnapped and sold into slavery, in utterly unflinching fashion. The film's strength lies in its frankness and avoidance of either sentimentality or Quentin Tarantino-style irony. – Geoffrey Macnab, Independent, Jan 13, 2015

12 years a slave

This movie is an emotional experience that will open your eyes to the hardship and inhuman suffering forced upon so many in the south. Amazing actors with a brilliant script makes this drama an instant classic! Don't hesitate, buy it .

spectacular

Loved it!!

flawless

Probably one of the best movies I have seen in the last 10 years. Has the emotional power of Schindlers List. Incredible acting. Riveting story. If you aren't feeling emotional at the end of this, you aren't human.
