About the Movie

Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who go to New York City when Dave lands a deal with a major record label. But the excitement of Dave’s new-found fame affects the couple in unexpected ways, leaving Gretta unsure of her future—until Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a record label executive with a few problems of his own, stumbles across her performance on an East Village stage. Dan is immediately captivated by Gretta’s raw talent and unique sound, leading to a life-changing collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City. BEGIN AGAIN, from writer-director John Carney (Once), is a soul-stirring story about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Another sappy but engaging musical fable from the Irish writer and director John Carney, who made "Once." – David Denby, New Yorker, Jul 14, 2014

Fresh: You can't really blame writer-director John Carney for trying, but despite a few very nice moments, this bigger, slicker follow-up mostly argues that Once should have been enough. – Bruce Ingram, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2014

Fresh: Its soft-rock bonhomie [prevails] over a story that often registers as trite or naive. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jul 7, 2014

Rotten: Begin Again is a not-entirely-successful movie about not selling out; it's a theme that must concern Carney deeply. – Kate Taylor, Globe and Mail, Jul 11, 2014

Surprisingly Awesome

I really enjoyed this movie. It could easily have gone for the cliche but didn't. There was no easy ending, no nice little bow. But all without losing the feeling of a nice movie.

Amazingly refreshing

I wasn't sure what to expect with this but was amazed by the talent, the songs, the message and the feeling left after watching it. Definite recommend.

What a pleasure to watch

This movie was such a pleasure to watch, from the beginning to end. Like one of the reviewers said, the talent was fantastic, and the movie just left me feeling really good. We need more movies like this. I recommend this movie to everyone.
