About the Movie

The greatest trick the teen movie ever pulled was convincing the world it wasn't worth a second look. A genre more than fifty years in the making, teen cinema has grown from a lowly sideshow to a staple of the Hollywood landscape, yet it remains a curiously unexamined phenomenon. Diving headfirst into the inner psyche of the teen genre, the film finds itself within a parallel universe - one occupied by an entire generation of big-screen teens we've loved and loathed in equal measure. Part adolescent fever dream, part roving visual essay, Beyond Clueless puts the movies themselves under the microscope on a quest to lay bare the genre's beating heart. Forgotten classics are unearthed, old favorites are upturned to reveal new meanings, and questions are asked about what's really going on behind the raucous house parties, glittering prom nights and joyous graduations that make up this most beguiling of cinematic worlds.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Beyond Clueless may be messy in places but it's also strange, occasionally disorienting and full of flashes of madness. Not unlike adolescence itself. – Ryan Gilbey, New Statesman, Feb 2, 2015

Fresh: The film deep-mines those American high-school tropes, from bullying at the lockers and cold-shouldering in the cafeteria to panicking about the prom, and, of course, sexual awakening. – Kate Muir, Times (UK), Jan 23, 2015

Fresh: Charlie Lyne's documentary about modern teen movies is entertaining and insightful, but also scattergun in its approach. – Geoffrey Macnab, Independent (UK), Jan 23, 2015

A Crazy and Fascinating Teen Movie Tribute

Filmmaker Charlie Lyne uses nostalgia to gain initial acceptance to his crowd, and then offers another perspective about seemingly shallow flicks.

The research goes from buzzkill to brilliance in this experiment that is essentially 'Room 237' for the Freddie Prinze Jr. crowd.
