Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Stilted, claustrophobic and more stylish than substantial.
Rotten: I have to admire a mainstream movie that's so overwhelmingly bleak, but that's the only real distinction of this dystopian sci-fi drama.
Fresh: Glover's occasional all-knowing commentary and the dreary music score dull the edges of what was bound to be a challenging project.
Fresh: The film is far from dull or careless but it's not convincing as a lesson in human frailty. If you're going to subject us to this much degradation, it has to be irresistibly believable, not just relentless.
Powerful, beautiful and disturbing
This film had astonishing acting performances, great score, beautiful direction, and an original and through-provoking story. My only problem was it was that there were several (if not many) extremely difficult scenes to watch which made it a dark film in a very real and disturbing way.
from the book...
people should be aware that this movie is based on the nobel prize winner Jose Saramago's book of the same title! definitely recommend reading the book before watching the movie.
This movie is really wierd and disturbing, but also is very cool. The way it's filmed and the look of it is actually very beautiful. Good story line, and also I think that if this really happened, it would ressemble this.
