Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's narratively uneven but the occasional lapses of focus are rescued by Cate Blanchett's riveting lead performance. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Aug 9, 2013

Fresh: This also benefits from one of the strongest casts he's assembled in years: Cate Blanchett is exceptional in the lead, and there are strong supporting turns from Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, and (in a surprise dramatic turn) Andrew Dice Clay. – Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader, Aug 9, 2013

Fresh: Lives constructed on pretense can only stand for so long. Watching them collapse is appalling but undeniably entertaining. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Dec 17, 2013

Fresh: A sharply observed, post-economic crash comedy-drama that boasts a formidable performance by Cate Blanchett and addresses such pertinent real-world concerns as class, gender and corporate criminality in urban America. – Geoff Pevere, Globe and Mail, Nov 4, 2013

Outstanding movie making

Blanchett's acting better than ever (and she's done great work), Baldwin fabulous. The story is a gripping drama. This is absolutely fabulous movie making.

Oscar worthy & disturbing

Kate Blanchett's performance is a stunning example of what is best about Woody Allen's scripts. Irritating, vulnerable and altogether too human, she makes us feel for her situation as though she were a close relative or friend. Anyone who has been remotely touched by Bernie Madoff's malfeasance will recognize this character as a thinly disguised version of his wife. Haven't we all asked: "What did she know and when did she know it?" Well this movie nails the answer that I found plausible.

One of Woody Allen’s Best

I’ve never experienced the humour and the serious/sad side of something integrated so well in any of Allen’s other films as this one - the story and Kate Blanchett’s acting makes this rare integration possible. A brilliant movie.
