In 1872, John Henry Clayton (Kiefer Sutherland) retires as a gunfighter and returns to his hometown of Fowler, Wyoming in hope of repairing his relationship with his estranged father, Reverend Clayton (Donald Sutherland). However, he soon learns that the town is in turmoil, as the railroad will be coming through the area and a criminal gang is terrorizing ranchers who refuse to sell their land. Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: An old-school western that is a little too old school for its own good.
Fresh: Father and son team up for a Western in the classic style.
Fresh: Refreshingly and unabashedly sincere in its embrace of Western conventions and archetypes.
Rotten: Fans of the genre - and the cast - may find it a pleasant enough diversion, but given the recent wave of strong frontier dramas, this film feels especially minor.
The storyline we have seen before many times. These actors make the story new and entertaining. Having the Sutherlands face to face for the first time is the key to seeing this Western Drama. Wincott, Cox and Moore complete a great cast. John Casar leading with his great directing and cinema photography by Ohashi give you a look to experience.
I'm not sure why the lower ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The plot, especially given that it's a Western, is credible, but the acting of the Sutherlands was incredibly good. I would have purchased the movie on those merits alone, especially to see father and son acting together. Both are incredibly good actors. It was a joy to watch.
...all the elements of the story we ve seen,so what. Here in this film and this cast is a great western.
