About the Movie

Academy Award nominee Will Smith (Best Actor, The Pursuit of Happyness, 2006) stars in this action-packed comedy as Hancock, a sarcastic, hard-living and misunderstood superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public. When Hancock grudgingly agrees to an extreme makeover from idealistic publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman, Juno), his life and reputation rise from the ashes and all seems right again--until he meets a woman (2003 Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, Best Actress, Monster) with similar powers to his and the key to his secret past.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Hancock makes for one unexpectedly satisfying and kinky addition to Hollywood's superhero chronicles. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: It doesn't take itself as seriously as it should, and undercuts a final act that should have and so could have packed a mighty emotional wallop. – Robert Wilonsky, Village Voice, Sep 19, 2008

Rotten: Train wrecks are intrinsically spectacular, and Will Smith's new movie offers a doozy. Two of them, in fact. – Tom Charity,, Dec 17, 2008

Fresh: As popcorn movies go, this is fleet, funny, and even thoughtful: its central question, nicely underplayed by director Peter Berg, is why power and altruism never seem to intersect. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

The Five-Star Will Smith

As always Will Smith is just not able to make a bad movie or even a bad production. I advise every one to buy or rent it (whenever possible). You would think that a "super-hero" movie would be typical and expected (i.e., Superman), but you sure will be surprised when you watch this. Great movie!

The first half is the Hancock we went to the theatre to see. But the second half is the same stupid superhero storyline we get all the time. Not worth the buy. Rent it.
