About the Movie

From director Clint Eastwood, "Invictus" tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa's underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A noble and compassionate work that in its later scenes manages successfully to invest our emotions in the triumph of an important - if overlong! - sporting victory. – Dave Calhoun, Time Out, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's possibly Damon's most impressive major role to date. – Film4, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Invictus may be a rather cheesy way into the story of South Africa, but in the end you're glad it's there for a new generation to whom the words "Free Nelson Mandela" are history. – Kate Muir, Times (UK), Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: A monolithic sporting saga that seems content to pose on the podium, lulled by the belief that its subject matter provides inspiration enough. – Xan Brooks, Guardian, Jul 7, 2010

I was in South Africa in 1995 and attended the sodden quarter final match in Durban (seen in the movie), so I can attest to the significance of the Springboks' success on the rugby pitch to that country. Canada's minor role in the tournament is also portrayed accurately. My Suid Afrika friends and colleagues were all thrilled by the situation, despite their apprehensions about Mr. Mandela and the profound societal changes after apartheid. The entire country went cheerfully nuts after the final. Sports movies are difficult to do well, and rugby is VERY difficult to portray on the screen, but Eastwood manages it with great skill. Freeman and Damon are superb. History comes to life. See this movie and share the glory.

This movie was soo amazing. It had me glued to the movie screen from the very first scene. Morgan Freeman is truly at the top of his game with his portrayal of one of the greatest equality rights activists the world has ever seen (Mr. Mandella). I have to admit, I was a little nervous at first with Matt Dillon and the rugby aspect of the story (even though it is crucial to the actual events). I am so happy this didn't turn out to be just another sports movie, and actually utilize the sport scenes to tell an important and deeply powerful story of a turbulent time in global affairs. This is a must-see movie. The fact this film did not win the top Oscars is a true shame because it deserved each and every one of them for the stellar cast, writing, cinematography, and other behind-the-scenes touches that really make you feel you are in this amazing turning point in South African history. Buy this movie, you will not be disappointed! And help support the creation of more movies of this caliber with your purchase! Mr. Freeman, Mr. Dillon, and Mr. Eastwood I salute you all on a job very well done!!

Saw this movie in theaters, though it was a little long, it was easily one of the best movies that i have seen this year... THIS MOVIE IS A MUST BUY!
