Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The metaphorical mother-child connection becomes a mystical horror show of significant power. Sadly it comes too late to save "Mama." – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Jan 18, 2013

Fresh: Chastain has an excellent time. And so did I, for most of the movie: It's much more suspenseful than violent, being careful not to allow us to figure out Mama too quickly. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Jan 18, 2013

Fresh: Screenplay contrivances aside, it's as stylish and atmospheric as modern horror gets. – Drew Hunt, Chicago Reader, Jan 25, 2013

Fresh: There's something eerily effective about juxtaposing childhood innocence with the violent, the supernatural, the deranged. Evil shines all the more brightly when held up against the sweet promise of youth. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Jan 18, 2013

Worth your while

Dark and twisted but fun to watch till the end.

Very Well Done.

I saw this film in theatres and I enjoyed it. Really well done story, great atmosphere and well acted. Plot slowed at points but that's over shadowed by the films dark tones and creepy moments.

I thought I had the ending figured out before we got there, boy was I wrong. An essential film for any horror fan to see in 2013.

So good!

Watched this in theatres and almost got kicked out because my friends and I kept screaming and throwing empty pop bottles when MAMA starting moving around.

Very good movie, totally worth getting!
