About the Movie
Adrien Brody and Penelope Cruz star as legendary Spanish matador Manolete and his tempestuous girlfriend Lupe Sino, respectively, in director/screenwriter Menno Meyjes' tale of love and bullfighting.
Really bad audio dubbing in this film
Not sure why, but the English overdub on this film is about 2 seconds behind the visual. It was rather annoying. The film itself is rather slow and plodding. Sure glad that I didn't pay $26 and a babysitter to see this in a theatre!
Ole!...or maybe not.
Two fine actors, but in my estimation, the relationship between the them is not very convincing. From what the vintage footage shows, the director attempted to cast the characters as close in appearance to the real life individuals as the box office will allow... but Adrien and Penelope....hmmmm...that's beyond creative license. If you are a romatic, watch it and weep. If the thought of these two swapping spit leaves you crying bull, move on.
Never seen a bullfight in Spain or met Manolete, but after a good read of Hemingway’s “Death in the Afternoon” and reading of the legend of Manolete - I heard they made this movie. Honestly, I think it is hard to put into film everything that a bullfight means. Even harder is to have to attempt to act a role that honestly, is next to impossible to embody. Brody looks shockingly like Manolete, which helps in the role and he does a fine job for never having been a Matador, I was wanting him to go deeper into the character somehow.
It’s a huge challenge to summarize the life of a man into one movie. It has some over dramatic scenes in some parts, but seems a part of the script. The only other Bullfight movie “The Matador” with El Fandi is worth watching, as it is a documentary of a real bullfighter. Overall, Blood & Passion is worth the rental or purchase.
