Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A pleasing melange under the direction of Mark Waters, who, after Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, is becoming the go-to auteur of traumatized youth. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The movie, based on the best-selling series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, tells parallel tales of fathers who abandon their children, but it glosses over the trauma of those sagas in favor of special-effects-laden escapism. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Feb 15, 2008

Fresh: The storytelling is economical and brisk. In some ways, Waters approaches it more as a pre-teen horror movie. – Tom Charity, CNN.com, Dec 15, 2008

Fresh: The film is graced with a mostly superb cast, superior special effects, a sparkling musical score by James Horner and a fantasy-filled plot with a bit of moralizing, but, fortunately, only a bit. – David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle, Apr 4, 2008

Awful

The movie was awful! You can basically predict what is going to happen next.Save yourself the time by not watching this.

Not the Greatest

I personally loved the books because they were filled with details and encounters with tons of magical creatures. The movie does NOT do the books justice and in fact changes the storyline into a very under developed plot where you don't really get to know any of the characters or species very well and stuff just randomly happens. Not to mention they changed many important parts and characters of the stories so that the movie just becomes a kids action flick with no substance. If you like stories on this topic I'd suggest reading the books instead of watching this movie.

Adults can love it too

Hey I am big into fantasy movies and I thought this one was great for the family. Not everything has to be as violent like Pans labyrinth to be considered a great movie. I will definitely watch this one over and over :)
