Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Despereaux is a pleasantly immersive, beautifully animated, occasionally sleepy tale. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Despereaux is a rare creature, not only for the handmade look and subtlety of its computer-generated imagery but also for its irony-free embrace of once-upon-a-time storytelling. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The imagery is colorful and artfully rendered, but the filmmakers, favoring technological wizardry over story, have beefed up the narrative with teeming rodent civilizations, a seafaring sequence, and gladiatorial action pieces. – Andrea Gronvall, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Despereaux is a little too desperate to be loved. – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jun 24, 2010

great animation and great movie.

A little scary for younger kids but great way to discuss the fact that bravery comes by doing the right thing though scared anyways. I thought the theme of the movie, some odd and unique plot lines, and animation made this a great pick.

I don't know why people keep saying this movie was boring! I loved it! It was funny and had good animation, and it brings back some of that old fairytale stuff back in a new way. The animation was great, and you should definately see it. I watch it as much as I can. Like really, it was very good. Don't listen to all the negative remarks. Just see it for yourself and decide whether it was good or not. I personally though it was fantastic, another pixar/disney or whoever made it, classic.

How Are People Saying This Was Good?!?!

I had read the book long before I had seen the movie. I expected this movie to be amazing and to make a long story short, it wasn't. It was not at ALL like the book and was aimed at far younger audiences. All humor in the movie was terrible as well. People are saying that it is a great family movie, but me even being a child I can tell you not to watch this with your kid! You will be bored out of your skulls.
