Junior Murvin Essentials

Junior Murvin had a gentle, keening falsetto that could send the earthiest of Jamaican riddims into the stratosphere, making him the Curtis Mayfield of 1970s roots reggae. With Lee Perry's classic production behind him, Murvin's delivery is heartbreaking and effervescent on the classic “Police & Thieves” as he likens the law to the violent disorder in Jamaica, and his vocals are tender on the languid and swampy “Tedious.” The singer's high notes also work with King Jammy's drum-machine bounce on “Jack Slick,” and Murvin recasts Mayfield's “Gipsy Woman” as a hushed and soulful ballad using only an acoustic guitar.
