great, but annoying

In comparison to most podcasts, this one is excellent. But I think it's the weakest gimlet media podcast so far. Not sure why I don't like it, maybe the hosts, or the tone, maybe it wants too hard to be smart and entertaining. Or maybe the problem is the concept that one Adam tries to convince the other Adam, but the "convincing" tone is hard to keep up with for more than a few minutes. I miss the NPR sobriety.

Great Concept, Highly Polished, Lacking Sincerity

I am a HUGE fan of Gimlet Media. Every show they’ve done, I’d give 5 stars. Surprisingly Awesome though is frustrating. Many listeners have expressed something “off” about the show that is irritating, but can’t quite put their finger on it. The thing that is missing is SINCERITY.

The show is highly polished, pacing is great, and everyone involved is highly talented. The problem is that these things alone do not make an excellent podcast.

The hosts often give off a vibe that they are ‘acting’. The dialogue about given topics seem very contrived and it’s off-putting. I know that Gimlet shows are scripted, but the difference with other Gimlet shows is that the hosts genuinely feel the things they are saying. With Surprisingly Awesome, I feel like the hosts are trying to hit certain narrative beats, not because they believe them, but because they are convenient to the narrative.

Alex Blumberg once cited that audio is the easiest media format for audiences to detect lies and insincerity. This is definitely the case with Surprisingly Awesome.

I’m genuinely rooting for this podcast to be awesome! It’s so close, but please drop the act. You still have me as a subscriber for now!

The recent episodes are very stale and boring

The new topics are boring, and the hosts for episode #17 were awful. Unsubscribed.
