The Coast presents: 25 for 25. A year-by-year audio archive. Through the lens of the city’s alt-weekly, editors Jacob Boon and Tara Thorne bring you the stories that shaped Halifax over the past quarter-century.

From the first issue of the free newspaper—published June 17, 1993—to the latest blog post, The Coast has had a clear mission: to cover Halifax better than any other media organization on the planet.

Founded by six friends from King's College who were inspired by New York's Village Voice, The Coast has remained independent and locally owned even as other Nova Scotia papers (not to mention the iconic Voice) surrendered their independence to the disease that is corporate chain ownership.

The Coast's weekly mix of award-winning news, arts and entertainment listings earned it membership in the international Association of Alternative Newsweeklies in 2003, a sure sign that outsiders think The Coast is on the right track. But external validation will always come in second-place for The Coast, where connecting with Halifax readers is most important.

The Coast is a controlled-circulation newspaper, distributed free every Thursday at over 610 locations around HRM. The highest concentration of papers can be found on the peninsula, around the university campuses and downtown.

Excellence in Capsulating Time

I've just finished 2001, the 10th show in the podcast. So I figured to write another review in the middle of the journey through your time capsule. Ha! looks like i did one a few months ago. well, it's that good!
This is such a great podcast! Each episode weaves micro haligonian life with national and international stories with skill, wit, perspective. You're not afraid of the serious or tender stuff either. Your guests are intriguing, enriching the shows immensely. Your interviews with them and the questions bring out fascinating portraits of life at that time. Thank YOU!!!
