A Great Self-Help Resource for People Who Stutter

I love this podcast. I can tune in and listen to women who stutter tell their own stories themselves. Pam let’s them do it with her great interview style and personal understanding and empathy of stuttering and stutterers.
SLP’s working with people who stutter should listen and learn that stuttering is more than blocks, repetitions and prolongations. That their techniques are not infallible and that they often do more harm then good. Stuttering therapy must involve feelings and attitudes, listening to your clients, advocating for their human rights at school and work.
The great theme of Pam’s podcast is acceptance and management of stuttering so as to be a speaker who is understood and assertive in what she says and her right to say it. Speaking freely and not according to some arbitrary standard which stutterers had no part in constructing, but only grinds them down.
Pam isn’t throwing in the towel on Fluency. The answer to the social penalty of stuttering is not simply speech tools which often don’t work and leave many feeling like failures. Neither does Pam claim to have the answer. But, my goodness, with this podcast she has brought people who stutter together in a beautiful community to talk about it and encourage others to talk about it. Pam didn’t throw in the towel on Fluency, she’s getting into the ring and making peace with stuttering.
What a pleasure it is to hear women stutter!

Guess what? There are women who stutter!

… and Pamela Mertz, the producer, has found them! It is estimated that about 1% of the adult population stutters, and that of that 1%, only about one out of five are women. The minority within a minority. With these figures, there is clearly a need for a podcast dedicated to women who stutter. Growing up as a man who stutters, I thought they didn't exist. This podcast revisits common denominators, as well as gender differences in stuttering, from the women's perspective. Pamela Mertz brings in great guests who share parts of their stories in a casual conversation format. Informative and inspiring!
