Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier (Anson Mount) who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The series documents the railroad’s engineering and construction as well as institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction. Hell on Wheels chronicles this potent turning point in our nation’s history and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

Filmed in Canada

I enjoyed the pilot. Even more so when I read it was filmed in Alberta.

ça décoiffe !!

Au premier abord, du calibre de Deadwood, à suivre, voir si la suite tiendra la route

Great settings, good dialogue, but the plot ...

All the other reviews I read before buying this in HD were glowing, so I had great expectations for the series. The locations and details of the work camp are well done, except after a while all the mud just looks staged. Likewise the costumes are great, but a little too staged. The problem begins when you realize that the series is composed of a series of stereotypes: the vengeful gunslinger, the naive Irish immigrants, the strong (and beautiful) woman; the greedy tycoon, and oh, the noble, principled, and erect ex-slave. The background story - the desperation of the times - is interesting, but wears thin when faced with the formulaic and sometimes hollywood-esque foreground stories. The heroine's transformation from a scared, desperate, and parched fugitive (in spite the omni-present river) to a well-grromed, fresh-faced, and prettily-clothed lady is probably the most jarring and unbelievable of the plot changes. Do I regret buying this? No. It was worth $14 for the series, but does it rate an average of four stars? No. I measure good TV from The Wire series or Breaking Bad, and this does not come close.
