JACK is a 90-minute movie for television that tells the story of Jack Layton's last federal election campaign in 2011 and his tragic passing only weeks later from cancer. It's a love story between Layton and his wife Olivia Chow, following the couple through their shared life in Toronto municipal politics in the 1980's and 90's and onto the national stage in the 2000's. It depicts their political fights, victories and failures as they both rose to prominence, while tracing their deepening personal connection to each other. Canadian political leader Jack Layton was widely loved, often disagreed with and sometimes ridiculed, but rarely hated. A man who believed strongly in participatory democracy, Layton struggled in his final days to keep the focus on his party's policies even as his own failing health was stealing the spotlight. JACK is about a man at the height of his popularity who died after achieving a victory that had been decades in the making, leaving the legacy of that victory for others to try and fulfill.
