Seit Ende der 1970er-Jahre war er als DJ und Produzent von Hymen wie „Baby Wants to Ride“ (1987) einer der Erfinder des neuen Dance-Sounds Chicagos. Als dieser bereits um die Welt gegangen war, veröffentlichte Knuckles mit „Beyond The Mix“ sein Longplayer-Debüt – ein klassisches House-Album mit Rap- und Soul-Beiträgen, dass sowohl die Energie der Partys einfing, als auch die spirituelle Tiefe dieser Musik zum Ausdruck brachte.
