Reseña de álbum

This perfectly done three-LP set from the Time-Life Giants of Jazz series differs from their other releases in that, instead of being a sampler, it contains every possible recording by its subject, the ill-fated clarinetist and altoist Frankie Teschemacher. Although not a virtuoso and occasionally a bit erratic on records, Teschemacher was a consistently exciting performer who always pushed himself. He is heard on the four groundbreaking recordings of McKenzie and Condon's Chicagoans and with Charles Pierce, the Chicago Rhythm Kings, the Jungle Kings, Miff Mole's Little Molers, Eddie Condon, the Dorsey Brothers, the Big Aces, Wingy Manone, Ted Lewis, Elmer Schoebel, the Cellar Boys, and on one lone title ("Jazz Me Blues") issued under his own name. Among the other sidemen are cornetists Jimmy McPartland, Red Nichols, Wingy Manone, and Muggsy Spanier; Bud Freeman and Mezz Mezzrow on tenors; pianists Joe Sullivan and Art Hodes; and drummers Gene Krupa and George Wettling. In addition to the 34 known recordings where he is obviously present, this set has six other titles (from Lennie Hayton, the Original Wolverines, and Howard Thomas's Orchestra) that Tesch might possibly have been on (although it is doubtful). The 48-page booklet is quite definitive, making this very attractive out of print set (which can still be found, often at budget prices) essential for collectors of early jazz.

A member of the fabled "Austin High School Gang" of young Chicago jazz musicians, Teschemacher started recording in 1927 (with the McKenzie-Condon Chicagoans), although observers of the period have stated that his records were not as strong as his live performances. A fine musician whose solos are a little reminiscent of his...
