One of the major tenor saxophonists in jazz since his emergence in the mid-'40s, Teddy Edwards has not led enough sessions throughout his career considering his great talent. In the 1990s, he has been making up for some of the lost time by putting a great deal of planning into his releases. For this ambitious effort he is joined by five brass, five strings, a harp, a four-piece rhythm section, and on three songs the fine young singer Lisa Nobumoto. As if that were not enough, Edwards wrote ten of the 12 songs, arranged all of them, takes "Prelude" unaccompanied and plays a bit of clarinet on "Serenade in Blue." It's an impressive effort.

Teddy Edwards was, with Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, the top young tenor of the late '40s. Unlike the other two, he chose to remain in Los Angeles and has been underrated through the years but remained in prime form well into his 70s. Early on, he toured with Ernie Fields' Orchestra, moving to L.A. in 1945 to work with Roy Milton as an altoist. Edwards switched to tenor when he joined Howard McGhee's band and was featured in many jam sessions during the era, recording "The Duel" with Dexter Gordon...
