课程简介

Identity and Society is a junior level English course designed to explore the defining qualities and external influences on identity.  Students will examine character identities and discuss the changes amidst diverse societal pressures through time.  Novels will look to the past (Puritanism), present (domestic violence), and future (full government control).  After looking through the scope of history and societal influences, the course will end with the stripping away of external forces to question what truly defines a person and gives meaning to one’s life.

This course will include some scaffolding in assignments for differentiation as well as a choice in final assessment presentation.  Students will be expected to read the chapters assigned and reflect upon various topics.  Each novel will follow similar outlining and the course will end with a comparative assessment.  This final assessment will be an expression of the student’s understanding of identity and its relationship to society, with specific references from the semester’s reading.

Overall, there will be an emphasis on critical reading, analytical writing, and technology skill development.
