Reseña de álbum

Demonstrating that Vermont is more than just a side project, the members of the Promise Ring and Pele further polish their heartfelt, acoustic indie rock on Calling Albany. Although they add more percussion and flesh out the songwriting, the trio seems to be a little more comfortable with their stripped-down approach. So much so that sometimes it seems that the lyrics were influenced by the blues more than rock. "I never got much relief from sharing my grief," Davey Von Bohlen sings in a downright sad, untitled tune. The fascination with Harrison Ford is still on the agenda, namely in "Arrest Harrison Ford!" (perhaps a sequel to Living Together's "Indiana Jones"), while props go out to basketball player Larry Bird in the lovely "Ballad of Larry Bird." It's the lyrics that make this second record compelling, though the gentle acoustic guitars are the calming factor. Much like their namesake, Vermont's emotive tunes are quietly scenic.
