On some level, this Acrobat collection of Amos Milburn's jukebox hits from his early period is essentially like the first best-of comp, but it ranges very wide indeed. There are blues, boogies, race records, jumping blues, latter day swing blues, honkin R&B, and proto-rock & roll in these 20 cuts, with some of the songwriting pianist's finest moments ever put on wax: "Let's Have a Party," "Sax Shack Boogie," "Thinkin' and Drinkin'," "In the Middle of the Night," and many, many more. The sound on this disc is fine considering the many sources these tunes came from — few original source tapes but some pristine 78s, and though the liner essay is sketchy, it fills in enough detail for anybody who isn't already in the know. This is a stompin' collection and the attractive price point makes it well worth seeking out.

Boogie piano master Amos Milburn was born in Houston, and he died there a short 52 years later. In between, he pounded out some of the most hellacious boogies of the postwar era, usually recording in Los Angeles for Aladdin Records and specializing in good-natured upbeat romps about booze and its effects (both positive and negative) that proved massive hits during the immediate pre-rock era.
