On other records, Venezuelan Edmundo Ros treats the samba and other Brazilian rhythms at least as well as any other non-native Latin orchestra leader does. But Sambas is not very Brazilian in lyric or rhythm. As with most of Carmen Miranda's hits, some of these Sambas could be called Rumbas, were it not for the lyrics. Sambas does not reissue the Samba with Ros 10" LP, although at least "Yankee Doodle Samba" is repeated.

Bandleader Edmundo Ros was the living embodiment of Latin music in World War II-era Britain. The toast of London's high society, he effectively introduced the rhumba and samba to the U.K. shores. Born December 7, 1910, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to a Scottish father and an African-Venezuelan mother, Ros spent much of his childhood in military school, playing percussion in the military band.
