Reseña de álbum

Sometimes it takes a while for knuckleheaded record companies to do the right thing, but they get it right eventually. This outtakes and rarities package was previously made available in 1994, but only as a fourth disc in a box set devoted to three lesser LPs released by the late Gaye in the 1970s. But here it is, finally, on its own, expanded from 16 to 25 tracks! (Though if you bought that box six years ago solely for this material, go ahead and feel gypped.) It's no idle boast of Motown boss Berry Gordy, Jr. when he claims in David Ritz's top-notch liner notes, "We probably passed on more hit records in a week [in the '60s] than most labels do in a year." With all the phenomenal writers and producers working for him, there was an torrent of rejected material, which accounts for why the Lost and Found series is so spectacular (if you are a fan of the Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, and Four Tops, buy their collections in this series, too!). Most outtakes records bring diminished returns, of interest only to the most committed. But the 25 obscure songs here all sound like a greatest hits package! We dare one to compare these to Gaye's other '60s gold, and say that tracks such as "It's a Desperate Situation," "This Love Starved Heart of Mine," "I Found Something" and especially "I Can't Help It (I Love You") aren't comparable to his 21 smash hits of this period (1964-1970), oldies staples such as "1965 #8s "I'll Be Doggone" and "Ain't That Peculiar" or 1969 #7 "That's the Way Love Is." In fact, the bulk of this is during Gaye's hottest '60s period, 1966-1968, circa the jolting Heard it Through the Grapevine LP (with its other shockers such as "You" and "Chained"), when the production caught up with his dynamite-packed voice and he really started to let it scream. Like the rest of the rock world, soul music was unbelievable during those years and Gaye and his Love Starved Heart is right at the top of the line. There is not a weak second on this collection, and any fan of Soul music should be salivating to get at this goldmine. What a voice. What an artist.

One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B to stylish, sophisticated soul to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his...
