Here's another underrated clarinetist, for very different reasons. For years, Noone headed a group with the eccentric front-line of clarinet and sax. Moreover, a very large number of his recordings were — or sounded as if they'd be — kind of hokey. It's a pity. Not only was Earl Hines the band's longtime pianist, but trumpeter George Mitchell, Bud Scott and Johnny St Cyr crop up at various times. Yet the sidemen aren't the point, any more than the hokey moments. Considered one of the three top New Orleans clarinetists of the 1920s (with Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet), Jimmie Noone had a smoother tone than his contemporaries that appealed to players of the swing era (including Benny Goodman). He played guitar as a child, and at age 15 took clarinet lessons from Lorenzo Tio, Jr. and Sidney Bechet (the latter was only 13, shockingly enough).
