Reseña de álbum

George Wettling was always the perfect Dixieland drummer and was used as a sideman with many groups in the 1940s and '50s, including those headed by Eddie Condon. This out-of-print LP has two four-song sessions headed by Wettling in 1951 plus a pair of numbers from 1957. The three overlapping groups (either septets or an octet) include such top Dixieland stars as trumpeters Wild Bill Davison and Max Kaminsky; trombonists Cutty Cutshall and Jimmy Archey; clarinetists Pee Wee Russell and Edmond Hall; and pianists Ralph Sutton, Joe Sullivan, and Dick Cary; an uncredited Bud Freeman is also featured on tenor during the two 1957 selections. Three fairly basic but obscure Wettling originals alternate with seven Dixieland warhorses (including "Runnin' Wild," "Indiana," and "After You've Gone") and the somewhat rare performances are quite enjoyable, making this LP one to search for.

Wettling, who recorded with Paul Mares in the mid-'30s, was still mostly an unknown when he came to New York in 1935, playing briefly with Jack Hylton Orchestra. He did a fine job with Artie Shaw's 1936 big...
