Portuguese electronica quartet Buraka som Sistema, comprising three DJs/producers and an MC (one of the producers, Conductor, also raps), reveal a fascination for the Angolan dance music kuduro, as well as breakbeat and grime influences. Three of the group’s members had played together previously in the drum ‘n’ bass collective Cooltrain Crew, before meeting Conductor (an Angolan with a background producing/performing hip-hop) to form Buraka Som Sistema. The EP FROM BURAKA TO THE WORLD introduced the band’s sound, which featured sequencers, samplers, and rapping, and was expanded to a full-length of the same name in 2006. BLACK DIAMOND followed in 2008.
