Album Review

InsideOut's debut album is a fun ride. The music reveals their personality and their passion by combining layers of harmony. It seems to fit any mood, although the serious numbers have more lasting power than the lighthearted ones. Kimball Brown's original song "Innocence" is an upbeat ode to the joys of finding the right person to love. The guys tackle Seal's elaborate rhythms in their impressive version of "Crazy," and anyone longing for an '80s revival will likely enjoy "The Promise" and "Somebody." Those creative juices were flowing overtime when the group came up with "McDonald's Girl," a love song for the girl serving their Big Macs, and "Squirrels," a fuzzy rewrite of the Beastie Boys' "Girls." Careful, the line, "She is an angel in a polyester uniform" could get stuck in your McHead for weeks. There aren't many slow spots on the album, and the sound is well produced. It's hard to believe only one man cranks out the "vocal percussion," a credit to member Jason Smith.
