Chronicling the 5th Dimension's run of hits from 1967-1972, Warwick offers up this impressive budget-line hits package, delivering all the hits along with few notable mid-range classics. And while not as thorough or easy to track down as collections on Arista and Rhino, this 18-song roundup will suit fans just looking for an easy way to check out the group's airy soul oeuvre. Including classic pop-soul from the pens of Jimmy Webb ("Up, Up, and Away," "Carpet Man"), Laura Nyro ("Wedding Bells," "Stoned Soul Picnic"), and Bacharach/David ("One Less Bell to Answer"), The Very Best also makes clear the fine talents of producer/arranger Bones Howe, who also includes on his resumé the resplendent likes of the Association, the Turtles, Tom Waits, and a slew of top West Coast jazzers. A tidy sampler for the 5th Dimension newcomers.
