Alban Gerhardt is a German cellist, known for his wide repertoire and committed performances. The son of a violinist in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, he began his music studies at age 8, studying cello and piano. His public debut was in 1987, in a performance of Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 with members of the Berlin Philharmonic. In his formative years, Gerhardt entered international competitions and appeared with major orchestras around the world. He has performed with more than 250 orchestras and worked with important conductors, including Semyon Bychkov, Christoph von Dohnányi, Neville Marriner, Marek Janowski, Colin Davis, Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Neeme Järvi, Christian Thielemann, and David Zinman, among many others. Because he wants audiences to experience classical music in new and challenging ways, Gerhardt often bypasses the famous cello concertos in favor of unfamiliar pieces, and he has learned over 70 concertos, many of which are obscure or new works. He has also devoted considerable energy to chamber music, and he has joined Steven Osborne, Cecile Licad, Lars Vogt, Christian Tetzlaff, Lisa Batiashvili, Arabella Steinbacher, Gergana Gergova, and Emmanuel Pahud in well-received performances.
