Barrence Whitfield

About Barrence Whitfield

A Boston-based singer of wild 1950s- and '60s-style rhythm and blues, Barrence Whitfield is the owner of one incredible pair of lungs and limitless energy and enthusiasm for his music. A soul screamer in the spirit of Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke, and early Don Covay, Whitfield and his band the Savages won a loyal following in Boston that soon spread nationwide after the release of their self-titled 1984 album. In time, he'd add full-bodied country (1993's Hillbilly Voodoo) and maverick jazz (2019's Songs from the Sun Ra Cosmos) to his repertoire, but his love of supercharged soul never faded, as confirmed by 2023's Glory.
