About Jorge Drexler

An eclectic, adventurous troubadour for the ages, Jorge Abner Drexler Prada is a Latin Grammy and Oscar®-winning singer/songwriter who’s been weaving spellbinding poetry and musical experimentation since the early ‘90s. Drexler was born in Uruguay in 1964, the son of Jewish migrants who fled Europe during World War II. He studied piano as a child and picked up guitar as a teenager, which led to him pursuing a career in music. In 1995, after performing for Spanish rock legend Joaquín Sabina, he was convinced to relocate to Spain where a string of early albums established his brand of folky earnestness and alt-rock grit. Drexler's 2004 breakthrough LP, Eco, included the hit “Todo Se Transforma”, which made him a household name across Europe and Latin America. His career was propelled even further when he became the first Uruguayan to win an Oscar® for the song “Al otro lado del Río”, from the Motorcycle Diaries soundtrack. Jorge Drexler's creativity has only flourished since, as he’s unspooled a disintegrating marriage on 12 Segundos de Oscuridad (2006), delved into electronic dance music on Bailar en la cueva (2014) and boldly deconstructed guitar sounds on Salvavidas de hielo (2017).
