About Roxanne Shanté

Juice Crew member and central figure in the Roxanne Wars (a recorded duel arising from U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne Roxanne"), Roxanne Shante pioneered the role of women in the very male-dominated world of hip-hop and, in the process, showed the boys how it was done. Breaking out with the furious response single, "Roxanne's Revenge," Shante epitomized a shock-and-awe style of rapping: awe-inspiring due to her wit, improvisational skills, and relentless flow, and shocking that it all came from the mouth of teenage girl. She followed her initial success with other standout singles (like "Bite This" and "Have A Nice Day") and two full-lengths before retiring in the mid '90s to pursue a career in criminal psychology.
