Album Review

Simpatico's debut album was a solid, if uninspiring, release. The main problem was that Jason Sweeney's sad melodies and heartbreaking vocals were let down by somewhat bland musical backing. That is not the case on this EP. The arrangements have opened up quite a bit, allowing for more drama and emotion to creep into Simpatico's sound. "Inseparable" is an epic song, the beautiful lyrics pushing along by soaring, sweeping strings and an insistent drum machine. "Garden Greene" features a skittering rhythm tracks and some nimble synth playing. "Self Conscious" has New Order basslines, nice guitar interplay, and a hooky melody. It would seem that since the first record Sweeney has spent some time learning how to use the machines, because his level of proficiency has grown immensely. His songs are more interesting because of his newfound skills and production acumen. Simpatico comes close to reaching the level of their inspirations (Field Mice, Pet Shop Boys, New Order) on this release. Indie pop fans who may have written the group off after being let down by the first album should give them another chance. They certainly have earned it.
