Album Review

Josephine Baker's debut Columbia release was a 10" LP consisting of eight French songs, all derived from her Parisian career and two decades of success in that city. This includes "J'ai Deux Amours," her theme song (better known in America as "Two Loves Have I,") which she introduced in 1932 at the Casino de Paris. Also featured are a pair of songs, "Haiti" and "C'est Lui," that she sang in her film Zouzou. And "Aux Iles Hawaii" and "Pardon Si Je T'Importune" came from Baker's Folies Bergere revues. The whole release was rather daring for Columbia Records of that day (which was in the process of trying to destroy Frank Sinatra's career at the time), and holds up extremely well across 50 years.

Born into poverty in St. Louis, dancer and singer Josephine Baker progressed from vaudeville to New York theater to the Parisian cabaret scene and became the toast of Europe before the age of 21. Though her later career wasn't quite able to handle such an early peak, Baker spent much of her life working tirelessly against prejudice, during World War II in Europe and the civil rights era in America.
