Album Review

Ray Miller led a fine dance band in the 1920s that frequently played jazz. Twenty-four of the best recordings by Miller Orchestra are on this single CD. Most of the numbers are quite jazz-oriented; C-melody saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer, trombonist Miff Mole, and cornetist Muggsy Spanier ("Angry" and "That's a Plenty") are heard from; and there is speculation (unproven) that Bix Beiderbecke might be one of the cornet soloists on the two takes of "Cradle of Love." Other highlights include "Lots O' Mama," "Mama's Gone Goodbye," "Red Hot Henry Brown," "Spanish Shawl," "Weary Blues," and "My Honey's Lovin' Arms." This is a strong acquisition for collectors of 1920s hot dance bands.
