Album Review

Quest, the quartet co-led by soprano saxophonist David Liebman and pianist Richie Beirach, recorded many sessions during the 1980s. This CD differs from the others in that the music is comprised of free improvisations with just a little discussion taking place beforehand to plan strategy. Since the group (which also includes bassist Ron McClure and drummer Billy Hart) worked together frequently through the years, the individual members were able to follow each other's thoughts and ideas with only subtle hints. Each song evolves logically if not predictably. The episodic 17-minute "Passages" is the most interesting performance, containing a spacy section, a lyrical Beirach-McClure duet, a spot for Hart's drums and a fiery closing ensemble. Intriguing music.
