Album Review

The Robert Ross Band make a defiant political statement on this four-track Fountainbleau EP, What Are We Fighting For? Those who oppose the Bush administration will obviously have a soft spot for these sentiments, while it's likely to raise the ire of the average conservative, since it's impossible to get past the political lyrics and simply enjoy the music. Leading off this modern blues disc is the title track, an indictment of George W. Bush's policy in Iraq, "One Man One Vote" questions election-day practices, "Fee Fie Foe Fum" depicts a global totalitarian state, and "We Are One" ends the session in a gospel mood with lyrics of peace and a positive future. Bandmembers Phil Cimino (drums and percussion), Mark Dann (upright and electric bass), Jon Loyd (keyboards and vocal harmonies), and Robert Ross (guitar and lead vocals) are obviously dedicated musicians using music to project a political stance. While some will commend it and others will scoff, it can't be denied that What Are We Fighting For? represents freedom of speech and democracy in action.
