Album Review

René Urtreger is one of the most boppish pianists of the European scene, though his exposure on American jazz labels has been limited since the 1960s. This 1985 solo session, recorded when he was in his mid-fifties, demonstrates that he still had plenty of chops. His opener, "Budomania," is a tribute to Bud Powell that is essentially a reworking of Powell's "Parisian Thoroughfare," while "Monkmania" contains a tantalizing touch of "Ruby, My Dear." He also plays familiar themes in a straightforward manner, including a dramatic treatment of "'Round Midnight" and an upbeat setting of J.J. Johnson's "Lament." "Zwillinge" is a thinly disguised variation of the standard "On Green Dolphin Street," though with imaginative flourishes. The remaining originals are all enjoyable, ranging from poignant ballads to upbeat bop compositions.
