Album Review

Riviera Summit captures a live performance by Thad Jones, Cat Anderson, and Claude Bolling as a trio — the former two on trumpet, the latter on piano. The performance originally took place at the Midem Jazz Gala in Cannes, France, in January 1979. The trio performs a total of 11 songs, some originals, some not. If you enjoy the music of the featured musicians or other Thad Jones Band performances, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this performance, even if there's nothing particularly special or novel about it.

Carmen McRae always had a nice voice (if not on the impossible level of an Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan) but it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and ironic interpretations of lyrics that made her most memorable. She studied piano early on and had her first important job singing with Benny Carter's big band (1944), but it would be another decade before her career had really gained much momentum. McRae married and divorced Kenny Clarke in the '40s, worked with Count Basie (briefly) and Mercer Ellington...
