Album Review

The Best of George Benson on A&M is an enjoyable budget sampler featuring the guitarist's jazz-pop recordings for that label in the late '60s and early '70s. These tracks were recorded between his initial records for Columbia and later breakthrough pop-chart material for Warner Brothers. While this disc works well as background music for casual listeners, those interested in hearing Benson in a soul-jazz groove should seek out his mid-'60s sessions with Jack McDuff on Prestige.

George Benson is simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, but he is also an amazingly versatile musician, and that frustrates to no end critics who would paint him into a narrow bop box. He can play in just about any style — from swing to bop to R&B to pop — with supreme taste, a beautiful rounded tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, always, an unquenchable urge to swing.
