Album Review

It is seldom a major event when a veteran performer re-records his or her old hits, but Janie Fricke's The Bluegrass Sessions is a happy exception. As the title indicates, Fricke didn't merely re-record her best-known songs — she reinterpreted them with bluegrass instrumentation and completely new arrangements that differ considerably from the slick country-pop of the originals. Some of her biggest hits, such as "He's a Heartache," "Don't Worry 'Bout Me Baby" and "Do Me With Love," adapt so well to the bluegrass treatment that traditionalists may prefer the remakes over the originals, especially since the arrangements hew closely to a traditional bluegrass sound with acoustic instrumentation, fiddles and banjo. The album isn't entirely devoted to re-recordings — Fricke also turns in renditions of Glen Campbell's "Faithless Love," Hank Locklin's "Please Help Me, I'm Falling," and Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." It's an excellent effort that will delight old fans and is likely to win Fricke some new ones. As a bonus, the CD includes a DVD containing a video of "You Don't Know Love" and an interview.

During college, she sang commercial jingles for a Memphis radio station and moved to Nashville in 1975,...
