Batuk

About Batuk

Kwaito never died. Batuk decided the future looked dull and went back to the crates to rework it. Not content with unearthing vestiges of Trompies and Lebo Mathosa's iconic moments, they took it to a new level by creating a red, orange and green aesthetic, smoothing it out with throwbacks of house’s most rapacious beatbreaks. Batuk are the new normal, trustworthy torchbearers of an eternal future where optimal social currency is shorthand for the amount of voshos-per-minute one's able to commit to. So get moving—dala what you must, and mix a pint of Kaapse slangetjie with a post-'94 Jozi youth chanting it's about time they listened to sgubhu; add cranked-up riddims dipped in mid-tempo funk—because it's '99 and Manteiga's charged up, unleashing a lekker vibe on producer Spoek Mathambo's boney-yet-thick beats—and serve in shebeens, on jukeboxes whose speakers cranked out many indigo moons ago. Behold, as freedom chants fill dancehalls and temples, spiralling out of control.
